Tuesday July 7th and Thursday July 9th
3:15pm – 7:30pm
The parent, student and teacher conversations will be an opportunity to set goals. Establishing goals for children at school is important for several developmental, educational, and motivational reasons. Sacred Heart works with parents and children to set goals to…
• Provide direction and focus. Goals help children understand what they are working toward, giving purpose to their learning. Goals minimize distractions and encourages children to concentrate achieving specific outcomes.
• Enhance motivation and engagement. When children see a clear target, they’re more likely to stay motivated and persistent, even when the tasks become challenging. Achieving tasks gives children a sense of accomplishment, reinforcing positive behaviour and effort.
• Promote responsibility and independence. Setting and working towards goals teaches students accountability. They learn to manage time, track progress and reflect on their actions – all life skills.
• Encourage a growth mindset. When students set and revise goals, they begin to see that efforts leads to improvement. A growth mindset fosters resilience and the understanding that abilities can develop over time.
• Improve academic outcomes. Research shows that goal-setting can lead to better-performance, especially when goals are specific, challenging and achievable. Teachers can use goals to tailor instruction and measure student progress more effectively.
• Support social and emotional development. Children also set goals related to behaviour, relationships and emotions, which contributes to their social competence and emotional regulation.
• Builds confidence and self-esteem. Reaching a goal reinforces the belief they can succeed, which boosts self-confidence and encourages further achievement.
In schools, goal-setting is most effective when it’s collaborative (between parent, teacher and student), age-appropriate, and regularly reviewed. It’s not just about achieving the goal but about developing the skills and mindset that come from the process.
